The song’s title, “No Genie,” has a twofold meaning: One, that the artist didn’t have any magic genie to grant him success, he has to work for it and 2.) he’s not a magic genie for some who want him to be, either. Incidentally, a lot of the footage of Cotto performing in the video was shot at his shows in Worcester, including his now iconic performance on top of a bus outside the now-closed Bridge Academy and Community Center, and his performance for the Joynerfest festival at the Palladium, a reminder that Cotto has had some big live-concert moments in a year when they were few and far between. “It’s funny how now (racial epithet) wanna come and aim at us/I was at my bottom dollar/almost gave it up … All I needed was time/but none of y’all (racial epithet) believed me/Where were y’all at when I had nobody to feed me?” There’s something reflexive, even resigned, about “No Genie,” the new single and music video by Worcester R&B artist Abbie Cotto. It’s a portrait of the artist at a turning point, one where it appears that the artist’s career is about to take off, and people who weren’t there for him at the beginning when he needed them are suddenly coming out of the woodwork, either wanting something or taking shots.
